How Your Podiatrist Can Help You Manage Your Ankle Pain

If you're experiencing ankle pain, it can be hard to get through the day comfortably. At Active Podiatry in Indianapolis, IN, Dr. Yong Chae and the rest of our care team are here to help you with all issues related to your feet and ankles. Let's take a look at the different ways we can work with you to manage your ankle pain.

Footwear Recommendations

Surprisingly, many ankle issues are caused by wearing the wrong footwear. If we determine that your shoes are creating your ankle pain, we'll work with you to provide guidance on the type(s) of shoes that are the best fit for your needs. Generally, shoes that offer good arch support and stability are helpful in relieving ankle issues in people with otherwise healthy feet.

Custom Orthotics

Some people experience ankle pain as a result of abnormal foot mechanics that force the ankle to function in an unnatural way. Thankfully, this is typically fixable with custom orthotics. Designed to correct abnormal foot mechanics, custom orthotics can align the foot and ankle, provide support, and reduce stress on the ankle joint.

Exercise Recommendations

If your ankle is weak, it may become injured easily, leading to ongoing ankle pain. We may recommend certain exercises to help you strengthen the ankle joint, both relieving pain and decreasing the likelihood of future injury. If you need extensive strengthening work on your ankle, we may refer you to a physical therapist who can work with you to relieve your ankle pain.

Referrals

Dr. Chae specializes in reconstructive foot surgery and is affiliated with several surgery centers and hospitals. However, if ankle pain is caused by a problem that we aren't able to fix in our office, we can recommend that you see another specialist or location for further evaluation and treatment.
