What are bunions?
Bunions grow very slowly at the base of the big toe and, over time, develop into a large lump. In their later stages, bunions cause pain and discomfort, though at first they normally do not produce any symptoms. Bunions are more common in women than men, but men can also develop this condition. Many doctors conclude that bunions often relate to wearing too-narrow, too-tight, or high-heeled shoes regularly, which forces the toes into an unnatural position and causes bunions to form.

How do I know I have a bunion?
Early stage bunions may not be as visibly obvious as those in their later stages. However, there are other ways to tell you may suffer from a bunion, including:

  • pain or discomfort at the base of the big toe
  • swelling at the base of the big toe
  • redness or irritation at the base of the big toe
  • corns or calluses
  • toes which overlap or point toward the outside of the foot
  • loss of mobility or range of motion of the big toe

Bunion Treatment in Indianapolis, IN
Early stage bunions may only require careful monitoring and simple lifestyle changes like switching narrow shoes for a more comfortable type, to slow or stop bunion growth. However, more developed bunions will require a surgery called bunionectomy to remove the bunion and realign the bones and tissues of the foot. Since the bunion’s growth causes the toes to point outward and overlap, bunionectomy can also straighten and realign the toes to lie flat.
